10 great art podcasts and streams to listen to while you draw

If you are looking for some interesting art-related podcasts or livestreams to put on while you are sitting at your desk or easel, then here are some you should definitely check out.

ART PODCASTS TO LISTEN TO

The Draftsmen

Stan Prokopenko and Marshall Vandruff are skilled draftsmen and experienced teachers, and they cover a range of things in their regular Draftsmen podcast. The chat about things like how to study the masters, or learn good composition, art and fear, and occasionally have guests over for interviews too.

Schoolism interviews with Bobby Chiu

My absolute best. Bobby Chiu’s artist interviews need to be on your list if you are into art for movies, video games, and animation etc. There are nearly two-hundred hours of quality listening on his channel with 180+ interviews. The stories of these artists and how they got to where they are both inspiring and insightful.

Lightbox Expo

If you know about Schoolism, then you surely also know about Lightbox Expo. Though fairly new, it’s a huge event for the entertainment arts industry. Last year, because of COVID, the entire thing shifted online. There are a bunch of panels and demos available through the website.

3-point perspective – SVSLearn

Authors and illustrators Will Terry, Lee White, and Jake Parker host this regular podcast that, like the Draftsmen, covers a range of topics focused on illustration “…how to do it, how to make a living at it, and how to make an impact in the world with it.” You can either watch via their Youtube channel or listen directly from the SVSLearn website.

Artstation Podcast

Fairly new still, with 17 episodes at the time of writing this, the Artstation podcast also covers a range of topics in their interviews with artists working in different fields of the entertainment arts industry.

Adam Duff – Lucidpixul

Adam’s videos are more focused on existing as an artist and a lot of the mental struggles we go through in terms of achieving goals or getting into the industry or coming to terms with our own ability when we just aren’t at the level we want to be at yet. He also does some product reviews over on his channel.

ART STREAMS TO WATCH OR DRAW TO

These are particularly cool to either watch and learn as the artist pushes pixels around, or to practice with them using the same reference images.

Aaron Blaise

Painter, teacher, and former animator at Disney, Aaron Blaise, does really solid streams regularly over on Twitch and Youtube. I’ve learned quite a bit just from watching how he builds up his illustrations in these sessions. If you want to learn more from him, be sure to visit his website, Creature Art Teacher, where he has a whole bunch of courses available. He often runs specials over there, so sign up to his newsletter for updates on that.

90min art challenge

Join Bobby Chiu, Masae Seki and guests in doing a 90 minute art challenge. Timed challenges are a great exercise to help you make fewer of those non-essential marks, or dawdle with indecisiveness (which I am so prone to.). Usually they are painting in the free online drawing tool, Magma Studio, which launched at Lightbox Expo last year.

Sinix – Comfy art practice

Every day, you can catch Sinix over on Twitch doing his comfy art practice. If you are new to digital painting, he has some really good tips and tricks videos over on his Youtube channel.

Paul Scott Canavan – Study Buddies

Every Monday and Friday you can catch concept artist, Paul Scott Canavan, over on Twitch for his Study Buddies session. You can get hold of the same reference, and draw along or just watch how he does things. Check out more of his work in this post.

Latest Study Buddies session was Mad Max themed.

Wrapping up…

There are plenty more great art podcasts and streams out there of course, so let me know in the comments what your favourites are!
