Let’s take a look at the art of the critically acclaimed video game, Journey, by award-winning game studio, thatgamecompany. Simple in it’s visual design, yet incredibly beautiful. It’s a great example of how shape, silhouette and lighting are key to powerful visual experiences.
Released in 2012 originally for PS3 but later ported for PS4 and PS5, Windows, iOS, and is available on Steam. Unfortunately on the iPad Pro I had issues with the sound not working, so just be aware of that if you want to play on that device. But you are here to check out the art so lets get in to that, starting with the trailer for the game.
Some visuals for the game…
The art director on the game was Matthew Nava, who was also the AD on Flower, another ThatGameCompany product.
Below is a video of some gameplay to the sounds of A Walk by one of my favourite bands, Tycho.
On that note of music, I can’t mention Journey without noting the art that was its musical score also earned itself a Grammy nomination in 2012. That’s the first time a video game has received such a nomination! The soundtrack was composed by Austin Wintory and it was an exciting recognition for video game music.
Journey in-game visuals
If you are into the art of Journey and want a book of it to flip through and get inspired by, you might be able to find one on Amazon here. You can also the app companion to enjoy the augmented reality component to it which I think is a pretty neat feature!
Wrapping up…
9 years after its release, Journey is still a great and worthwhile gaming experience. The art of Journey, both in terms of visuals and audio, make this video game a seriously impressive experience.
