How #VisibleWomen started…
Let’s jump back to 2016. For the awards of Europe’s second largest comics festival, the Angoulême International Comics Festival, 30 men and zero women were nominated. But there are so many skilled women working in the industry, so this definitely didn’t seem right. Then, in response to this, the peeps behind Milkfed Criminal Masterminds, Kelly Sue DeConnick and Matt Fraction, started #VisibleWomen. The aim “is to disabuse hiring professionals of the notion that women comic artists are rare and to raise awareness of said women with readers.”
When the online event started, it was focused on comics. Since then though, it has since grown to include female and non-binary artists in other spheres of entertainment art.
