Grab your smartphone, Clip Studio Paint has just made an exciting announcement for Android users! This great digital art app is now available for all Android devices, with support for Chromebooks as well.
Up until now, the mobile version of CSP was only available for Samsung Galaxy and Apple devices. On PC, it’s a solid alternative to Adobe Photoshop. This is just a quick look at CSP on my phone…
CSP in use…
I’m testing the app on with my Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite with an XP-Pen Deco Pro S. The drawing tablet came with on-the-go adapters and is Android compatible, so I could plug in and start pushing pixels around with ease.
You can also use your phone as a handheld controller for Clip Studio Paint on your computer or tablet with the app’s Companion Mode. The feature was originally only for Samsung Galaxy phones, but a recent update has made it available to all platforms. We’ll focus on drawing on the phone here though.
It did take me some time to just get familiar with the app and where different tools and functions were located. The app really has a lot to offer, so this was to be expected.
There is a wide range of brushes and brush customization which is great. Whether you want to do more painterly concept art, highly detailed illustrations, or comics, you can do it easily in here. For a full list of features for different types of art, check out their Feature’s and Function page.
Together with my tablet, the app picked up the pressure sensitivity well and I had no problems drawing neat thin and thick lines. I didn’t experience any lag with the relatively small canvas (1000x2000px) and brush sizes I was using. I’m running Android version 10, with 3GB RAM.
I did find that on a phone, the small screen size is tricky, simply because of how much there is to work with when you open up different settings.
Recommended device
If you want to get more into it, I definitely recommend checking out the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite as an affordable and portable option for digital drawing. Together with the S-pen and CSP, you can get started with learning digital art and produce quality artwork for clients and followers. For more professional-grade stuff though, and animation that might be a bit more demanding, I’d consider looking into something a little more powerful like the Galaxy Tab S7+. It has a bigger display, a faster processor, and much more RAM.
Payment Plans
You can download CSP on your Android and use it for free for one hour each day without registering. When you register though, you can get a 1 month free trial, and 3 months when you sign up for a monthly plan. If you are using a Samsung Galaxy device, you can get a 6 month free trial.
For Clip Studio Paint Pro on the Smartphone plan costs only US$0.99/month. The EX version, which has the animation features, is US$2.49/month. If you buy a full year up front, that price comes down quite a bit more.

– At least 6GB of free storage space
– Internet connection required for some features and payment processing
– 3GB or more memory required, 6GB or more recommended
– Smartphone: 6”+ display recommended
– Tablet: 10.4”+ display recommended

Wrapping up…
After testing out Clip Studio Paint on PC some time ago, and being very impressed with it, I’m excited to see this roll out on Android. Though my smartphone isn’t the ideal size, I’m still eager to give the app a proper shot. I’ll be sure to try draw something a little more interesting soon than squiggly lines and hatching and add more of my thoughts here later.
If you have a decent tablet, I would definitely recommend considering CSP for your drawing or even animation.
