Indie Game! The beautiful art of point-and-click adventure, Machinarium

The beautiful art of Machinarium - video game

I love the art behind this award-winning point-and-click adventure game by Amanita Design, Machinarium. You take on the role of the robot, Josef. By solving puzzles, you help him rescue his robot-girlfriend, and save the city from the Black Cap Brotherhood.

Awards for the game include:

  • The IGF 2009, Excellence in Visual Art Award.
  • A Nomination for 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards (DICE Awards).
  • Gamasutra, Best Indie Game Of 2009.
  • VGChartz.com, Best Indie Game Of 2009.
  • PC Gamer’s Best Soundtrack of 2009.

Art of Machinarium – Sketches

Below are some drawings straight from the sketchbook for the game. I always enjoy seeing this side of things. At art exhibitions, if there is a sketchbook to flip through, that’s what I gravitate toward. It’s that place where problems and ideas appear in their raw form and then you get to see the marks that go into develop or solve them. Sometimes those marks show frustration, or a frantic scribbling to get the all the ideas down in a moment of inspiration.

The art of Machinarium, both visual and audio, is what sticks in players memories and keeps them coming back. The gameplay is straightforward point-and-click, with engaging logic puzzles to solve in order to advance.

Snapshots from the game.

What I especially love about the look of the game, is that hand-drawn feel of it. Even with graphic design, I always appreciate analogue approaches and preserving that look into the final product. Below are some snapshots…
