digital art online courses with schoolism

Schoolism has just announced its Winter Sale of access to its online courses for learning both digital and traditional art. It runs until Jan 2021, so if you are ready to take your drawing skills to the next level, now is the time!

Whether you are interested in animation, sculpting, concept art, oil painting or caricature, Schoolism has high quality range of courses with top-notch instructors.

The Winter sale brings the normal price for the annual subscription from $300 down to $200, and it runs until 18 Jan 2021.

Schoolism has over 30 different online courses at the moment for both digital and traditional art.

They cover things as:

  • drawing fundamentals,
  • digital painting,
  • traditional and digital sculpting,
  • animation,
  • caricature,
  • oil painting and watercolour
  • visual development and more.

And the instructors? Oh man, what a line up. People like Nathan Fowkes, Djamila Knopf, Daniel Arriaga, the team from Tonko House, Justin Gobi Fields, and Terryl Whitlatch. Even Craig Mullins, who you could consider a modern master and the father of digital art, has a digital painting course on there. Don’t take my word for it though, you can look up these instructors to see the amazing projects and clients they have worked with.

From his course, Viktor Kalvachev talks about how he learned to shade so well with lines.

A relatively new addition to the Schoolism offering are these month-long artist workouts. These shorter exercises are like your art gym. Or think of them like your morning stretches to loosen you up for the creative work you have to tackle that day.

These daily sessions are around 20-60 minutes each and the 5 available so far (more on the way) are:

Artist interviews

I first learned about Schoolism from watching Bobby Chiu’s artist interviews. Every Monday I sat eagerly waiting for the next one. Listening to amazing artists like Marko Djurdjevic, Karla Ortiz, Loish, and Armand Baltazar share their stories of getting into the industry really keeps me inspired while I’m drawing in my studio.

There are well over a hundred interviews there, so if you are only learning about them now, you have plenty to listen to.

Art school?

If you want to get into art for the entertainment industry, I might recommend online learning first through something like Schoolism before considering a brick and mortar art school. I think this approach might fast-track your path to doing the kind of work you want to do, and be far more affordable. But there are others far more qualified to talk on this than me. I’d say do a bit of research on it and hear some different perspectives, because there are pros and cons on both sides.

Wrapping up…

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my subscription to Schoolism so far and can’t recommend it enough. I’m busy with Sam Nielson’s Fundamentals Of Lighting course and having some serious lightbulb moments.

As a gift for a beginner getting into art, it’s great, and that’s why I included it on our list of Christmas gift bundles for digital artists. And as someone already making art but wanting to level up or learn new mediums, Schoolism has plenty to offer.

With it’s Winter sale running through to January, that valuable investment in yourself is that much more accessible. Times have been tough, so if you aren’t able to afford it right now, that’s ok; look out for the Summer sale around the middle of the year.

In the mean time, check out those artist interviews, because those alone contain such valuable info on the entertainment industry and perspectives on being a a better artist.

That’s all for now!
