Star Wars Art – The creative fans inspired to make amazing things

It must be one of the most amazing feelings as a creator: making something that inspires others to create and go deeper into the world you’ve crafted. It can take so many forms; from illustrations and sculptures, to fan fiction and films, whole dioramas and cosplaying characters. Below are some of the art and things people have made inspired by Star wars universe.

Illustrations

I actually have a print of this hanging in my studio. It’s an illustration by Jake Parker that formed part of a themed Art Drop Club parcel. Being a big fan of the franchise, he’s done a number of drawings inspired by Star Wars.

Poster inspired by star wars character Poe Dameron by capskat26.

This piece is by capskat26, done with acrylic inks on illustration board. It was done for the Star Wars Fanzine: The Fans Awaken edition.

Fanzines are a great way to share you own art, stories and reinterpretations inspired by the things you love… or hate for that matter (would that be a nonfan zine or a haterzine?).

These comic book covers right here… I am in love with them. I’ve always enjoyed the look of old school covers and Vadim Dvoeglazov has done a solid job combining that with the Clone Wars story.

Sculptures, dioramas and customs

I first came across Adam Woodworth in a Tested video from MakerFaire 2018 where he was driving around a custom landspeeder toy car. Woodworth also makes flying Start Wars things such as snowspeeders, X-wings and this super cool Lamba Shuttle.

Dioramas are something I’m quite curious to experiment with since making my first dungeon tiles last week. One of the channels I follow is MiniBricks which has this one of Luke’s X-Wing stuck in the swamp on Dagoba.

Cosplay

Dressing up and really getting in to your favourite characters has become an art form in itself. It has become a huge component of of geek conventions such as ComicCon with parades and competitions. Thanks to that, people are putting in tremendous effort to produce some amazing outfits of and inspired by Star Wars characters.

This one is way on the high end: a Rankor body suit made by effects artist, Frank Ippolito, and his team.

General Grievous star wars cosplay

This general Grievous cosplay was put together by the UK Garrison. I’d be pretty nervous bumping into this fella at a Con.

If you want to see more damn near unbelievable SW cosplay, take a look at this post.

Fan films

Fan films are no small thing. From casting characters, storyboarding, signing costumes, and special effects, it also takes a lot of work and creativity to pull off.

Below is one of the most viewed fan films focused on Darth Maul, a character from the prequels designed by Iain McCaig that really intrigued viewers. His origin story film is one that I think many have hoped to see made. If you haven’t seen this Darth Maul: Apprentice fan film yet… enjoy!

Another that I always get excited watching is this reimagining of Scene 38 from A New Hope. It adds more to the confrontation between old Obi-Wan and Darth Vader.

There is no shortage of such fan films on YouTube, so be sure to go take a look at what other creators have made.

That’s all for now…

Well that is just a small taste of what some SW fans have made. Doing fan art in different forms can be an interesting learning experience, especially if you are trying to replicate the look, level of detail and quality of storytelling. You can gauge your ability on how well you achieve that, and you have a potentially huge audience that can give feedback.

Of course, reinterpreting things in your unique way and style, is always cool to see as well.

If you are really inspired by Star Wars, there are a number of great art books you might want on your shelf with official SW art. Check out Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy and Star Wars Art: Ralph McQuarrie**. These are two I’ve been eyeballing for a while.
