Independent art – RuinWorld, an adventure comic by Derek Laufman

Check out some of the art and sketches behind RuinWorld, a comic by Derek Laufman. The story follows Pogo and Rex on an adventure of ruin hunting. Joined by a few other characters, they battle an army of toads, stone golems, and try to stop the end of the world.

I managed to get signed copies of the 5-issue comic together with his ArtBook 3 which he did a Kickstarter for back at the beginning of 2019. The art book included a bunch of concept and character sketches for the comic. There was also page development stuff, from the initial panel thumbnails right through to the finished page, which was really cool to see. Laufman has worked for clients such as Warner Bros, Hasbro, Marvel, DC and DreamWorks.

About the comic…

RuinWorld starts off with long-time ruin hunter, Rex, and a rather nervous Pogo, about to search an old keep. Well, it’s Pogo’s turn to search it. It doesn’t take long for the action to start and Rex has to jump in, sword swinging.

They’re an unlikely duo that contrast well with one another, making for some fun jokes throughout the story.

The comic is published by BOOM! Studios and is well suited to a young audience into fantasy adventure. Though at 33, I really enjoyed it as well. Use your kids if you must, to have an excuse to get a copy of this.
